The 100 Club of Arizona has partnered with the research project: Sleep Assistance for Firefighters (SAFFIRE). The position(s) of a Sleep Health Coach will administer virtual sleep health coaching to firefighters. The project is a 5-year NIH-funded research grant through the University of Arizona (UA) and Arizona State University. The goal of this study is to implement a sustainable Sleep Health Coaching programs in fire agencies across Arizona. Part-time/on-call, contracted position(s) are available.
The Sleep Health Coaches are a core part of the study and are expected to conduct the sessions according to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Institutional Review Board (IRB) regulations. Through training provided by the University of Arizona, coaches will learn about sleep science, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i) informed coaching, and the fire service. After training, coaches will work individually with firefighters to understand their sleep patterns, set goals, and improve sleep health. Coaches will be designated campus colleagues at the UA, expected to report necessary information to the 100 Club of Arizona as well as the UA SAFFIRE study.
Requirements:
· Coaches must have completed at least 60 credit hours of higher education (equivalent to an associate’s degree) in an applied health-related major, including coursework in ethics and professionalism. Examples include nursing, medicine, exercise science, health promotion, psychology, sociology, paramedicine, and more.
· Coaches must achieve competency standards. The competency standards required through the University of Arizona's asynchronous course instruction will include at least:
* 3 credit hour UA course (approximate 90-130 hours). Hired Sleep Health Coaches can work at their own pace but would need to finish by end of December 2024 with the anticipation to start coaching in January 2025. The course will cover training in counseling (16 hours), sleep science and behavioral sleep intervention (16 hours), occupational health promotion (4 hours), and professional boundaries (4 hours), etc. Coaches will be compensated for this time.
* 4-hour ride-along to learn about the fire service
* Successful role-play of all components of the intervention with a peer
* Competent pilot administration of all components as rated by a doctoral-level behavioral sleep medicine specialist (study co-investigator)
* Completion of required UA and IRB regulatory trainings
* Upon completion of the coaching curriculum, a minimum of 25 clients will be seen
* Potential certification available in sleep coaching through the UA
Qualifications:
· Adaptable and flexible schedule to accommodate firefighters’ needs.
· High level of sensitivity and confidentiality required
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills
· Ability to multi-task
· Organized and detail oriented
· Need a private space to conduct one-on-one coaching via telephone/ audiovisual modality
· Computer with audiovisual telecommunication capabilities (Zoom software provided)
· Knowledge of, and previous experience with, public safety is a bonus
· Compensation: Contracted Position, $26-28.82/Hour
