Outreach Youth Worker YMCA Safe Place Services

Apply The incumbent in this position provides guidance and promotes the development of a healthy environment within the Youth Development Center (YDC) to support positive adult relationships with our targeted population of young adults, ages 16 – 24, who are homeless or at-risk of being homeless. This position includes oversight of the operations of the Youth Development Center, maintaining order and documentation as well as holding youth to center expectations. This person will provide some administrative support to the Outreach Case Managers as well. This role will utilize a strength-based model and positive youth development approach to educate and engage this population. The Outreach Youth Worker is an integral member of a team of adults and young adults whose mission is to educate and build relationships with runaway, homeless and street youth.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Champions the program’s mission and core values and challenges young people to accept and demonstrate core values of honesty, respect, responsibility and caring
- Engages youth and young adults in the YDC, develops trusting relationships, and helps meet the basic needs of participants
- Strict attention to maintaining safety, utilizing best positive youth development practices, as well as de-escalation and conflict resolution skills
- Oversees the operational activities/services of the YDC, maintaining order, cleanliness, and structure
- Supports street outreach efforts, engaging youth on the streets or at community events
- Maintains a high level of ethical conduct regarding confidentiality and professional boundaries
- Incorporates a multidisciplinary team approach to best meet the needs of young adults
- Organize, file, and maintains records, statistical information and assessments that are essential for evaluating the progress of youth and program
- Strict adherence to detail, as client records and outcomes must be properly reported/maintained at all times
- Assists with ongoing program development (short and long term) with supervisors
- Provides leadership, back-up, and support to Outreach Case Managers in their absence
- Assists with the transportation needs of young adults
KNOW HOW/REQUIREMENTS:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- High School Diploma or GED
- At least one year experience working with at-risk youth, young adults, and/or individuals experiencing homelessness
- Valid Kentucky/Indiana driver’s license
- Good driving record, must meet YMCA’s guidelines
- Strong oral and written communications skills
- Highly analytical, organized and adept at resolving conflicts
- Willingness to learn and implement the philosophies of Trauma Informed-Care and Positive Youth Development, and Strength Based Practices
- Strong computer skills (Outlook, Microsoft Office) and knowledge of web-based applications.
- Awareness of community resources and referring agencies
- Strong multi-tasking, organization and time management skills
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Outdoor work, staff will be exposed to elements of weather, walking on uneven terrain and within overgrown areas as well as have contact with homeless populations
- Walking, climbing, stooping, standing, kneeling, pushing, sitting, crouching, pulling, lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Series of dissimilar operations
- Ability to work in loud and crowded areas
STATUS: Part Time, @ 15-25 hours per week
WAGE RANGE: $15.00 per hour
Education Requirements (Any)
High School Diploma or GED
At least one year experience working with at-risk youth
young adults
and/or individuals experiencing homelessness
Certification Requirements (Any)
Valid drivers license
Good driving record
must meet YMCA’s guidelines
