Temporary-Exempt (TEX), Category 18:  This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer and shall not exceed 36 months.

Temporary-Exempt (TEX), Category 16: This is a Category 16, Temporary Exempt (TEX), an as-needed position not to exceed six (6) months or 1,040 hours in a fiscal year. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.

The Bureau of Building and Street Repair (BSR) provides professional construction, repair, and remodeling to City-owned facilities. We perform emergency-repair services twenty-four (24) hours a day to ensure that Police, Fire, and other Public Safety operations are fully functional; and oversee paving and street repair work, including patch paving and filling potholes, as well sewer repair, which includes brickwork.

Public Works currently has vacancies for one (1) Temporary Exempt - Category 18 and one (1) Temporary Exempt – Category 16 Painter positions within the Bureau of Building and Street Repair.

Job Description



Under general supervision, as a Painter, you will perform skilled painting work on exteriors and interiors of buildings, structures and equipment.

Important and Essential Duties:
Your duties as a Painter may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Applying paints and other protective or decorative finishes to various exterior or interior of buildings, including painting and finishing of partitions, window casings, doors, cabinets, cases, and woodwork.
  • Painting street equipment, traffic striping and markings, playground, facilities, and other outdoor structures.
  • Preparing surfaces for painting, including erecting and hanging scaffolding; removing all paint or varnish by scraping or sanding; washing, cleaning, and patching surfaces and otherwise preparing surfaces, such as wood, metal, glass, stucco, wallboard, brick, cement, drywall. Taping, floating and finishing drywall for painting or to accept secondary finishes.
  • Mixing and preparing paints, lacquers, varnishes, shellacs, and other preservatives.
  • Selecting, blending, and matching colors in proper proportions.
  • Assembling and operating various types of painting equipment, including spray guns, pressure washers, grinders, high-reach power, and other equipment.
  • Cleaning and maintaining brushes, air-less paint sprayers and other painting equipment; disposing of hazardous materials ensuring proper disposal protocols are followed.
  • Occasionally performing more exact painting, including lettering and touch-up work.
  • Transporting and delivering paint, materials, and various types of painting equipment to the worksite.
  • May occasionally plan work programs, including estimating and ordering materials and equipment required for assigned projects.
  • Preparing material take-off’s, estimates, work orders, and other job-related documentation.

Nature of Work: This position requires sustained physical effort with considerable standing, bending, and occasionally heavy lifting; working in confined spaces; intermittent exposure to hazardous heights and poorly ventilated areas, streets, and roadways; and ability to be cleared for respirator fit testing and use. Additionally, work at correctional and/or medical facilities may be required.

Education:
Completion of a recognized painters' apprenticeship program.

AND

Experience:
Two (2) years of verifiable experience as a journey-level painter which included a combination of painting exteriors and interiors of buildings, structures equipment, roadways and airfields. Experience solely in automotive or sign painting does not qualify.

AND

License:
Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver's License.

Substitution:
Additional qualifying experience can be substituted for the apprenticeship on a year-for-year basis.

Valid Driver’s License: Applicants  must possess a valid State of California driver’s license with  no restrictions that would prohibit them from legally performing the essential functions and duties of the role.
