Schedule : Monday – Friday
Hours : Shift work, 11:30pm – 8:00am, 7:30am – 4:00pm, 3:30pm – 12:00am
2024 Salary Range : $ 43,626 – $ 46,411

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a trainee position involving responsibility for learning the duties and routines in the operation and maintenance of a sewage treatment plant. The incumbent in this position undergoes on-the-job training to become qualified as an operator of sewage treatment plant. The work is performed under immediate supervision of a qualified operator. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

• Performs study and reading assignments, observes demonstrations and otherwise learns the techniques of operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant;
• Learns and assists in the operation and adjustments of pumps, valves, motors, screens, and related mechanical equipment;
• Learns and assists in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of pumps, valve, motors, screens, and related mechanical equipment;
• Learns and assists in the taking of samples and tests for control of plant operation;
• Learns and assists in checking meters for quantity of wastewater pumped and gauges for adequate operation of the treatment plant equipment;
• Learns to enter plant operations data into computer;
• Cleans channels, screens, tanks, and other equipment using hand and power tools and equipment;
• Reports on any unusual situations or emergencies;
• Performs increasingly responsible duties as assigned in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant;
• Performs any assigned duties that are similar, related, or logical extensions of the work activities previously listed.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

• Good physical condition with ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Working knowledge of hand tools and their use;
• Working knowledge of elementary principles of mathematics, chemistry and general science;
• Ability to learn principles and procedures relating to operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plant;
• Ability to learn to enter data onto computer with speed and accuracy;
• Ability to observe safety practices;
• Ability to understand and interpret written material, as well as understand and follow oral and written instructions;
• Ability to develop skill in the operation and minor maintenance of pumps, valves, and related mechanical equipment;
• Ability to read scales and gauges.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma AND six (6) months of experience in the plumbing/mechanical trades.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License at time of appointment; AND
• Must successfully pass the Wastewater Basic Operations Course as outlined in the New York Water Environment Associates Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations Certification Manual within one (1) year of permanent appointment.

Pay: $43,626.00 - $46,411.00 per year
